Meet Josh

Why I’m running

I’m Josh Adland. My wife Karen and I are raising our three children here, and Highland Park has become the center of our family’s life.

Between our synagogue, our children’s activities, and my work on the Housing Commission, I’ve gotten to know more of our neighbors and the things they care about. I want to give back to the community that has given our family so much.

I began my career in public service through Teach For America, teaching high school world history in the South Bronx. Working with students and their families taught me to listen, understand people’s different needs, and see how much a person willing to step up can matter to a community. Since then, I’ve spent 15 years in marketing leadership, earned my MBA at Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management, and now lead global marketing for a medical imaging technology company. That experience taught me to solve problems, bring people together, and turn ideas into practical results.

I’m running to put that experience to work for the people of Highland Park.

On City Council

What I’ll stand up for:

These are some of my priorities for Highland Park. I’ll keep seeking your input and make sure we take care with public dollars in every decision we make.

We know we need thriving business districts.

I’ll work to help businesses start, grow, and thrive, with a vibrant downtown and strong business districts throughout Highland Park.

I want to welcome investment that gives people more reasons to shop, eat, and spend time here. I’ll work with business owners and city staff to understand what gets in the way of opening or expanding a business and make those steps easier.

We know we need a more connected community.

I’ll work to create more opportunities for neighbors to get to know one another, within our neighborhoods and across Highland Park.

I’ll work with community partners on gatherings that bring people together across neighborhoods and generations. I want residents to hear about city decisions early enough to have a say, with more opportunities to ask questions and share their views.

We know progress must reflect our values.

I’ll work for more housing choices while protecting our neighborhoods and natural beauty.

People should be able to stay here as their needs change. As Highland Park develops its next comprehensive plan, I’ll work to make sure it provides a clear roadmap for our city’s future. I’ll look closely at what each proposal would add to the city and what it would mean for the people living nearby.

We know City Hall should be easier to navigate.

I’ll work hard to make city services easier to use, whether you’re improving your home, applying for a permit, or starting a business.

I’ll push for thoughtful use of emerging technology to simplify processes and reduce paperwork. It should be easy to determine what’s required, whom to call, and what happens next. I’ll work with city staff to identify the steps that cause confusion or delays and find ways to make them easier.

We know everyone deserves to feel safe.

I’ll work to make Highland Park a safe place for everyone, where families can feel secure and all people feel welcome.

I’ll work to ensure our first responders have the resources they need and support efforts to prevent gun violence and keep it out of Highland Park. I’ll also support responsible oversight of public safety technology, with clear safeguards for residents’ rights and privacy.

How I’ll approach the work

Listening.Solving problems.Following through.

I’ll bring an independent voice and an open mind to each issue. I want to hear from neighbors with different experiences and opinions, including people who disagree with me.

I’ll listen, do my homework, and use my best judgment to make decisions for Highland Park. While we won’t always agree, you’ll know where I stand and why, and I’ll work with others to get things done.
